Bandung Airport Set for August Reopening as Six Airlines Apply for Routes
West Java's main gateway is coming back online faster than expected. Indonesia's Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi moved the reopening of Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung forward from September to August 2026, and the response from airlines has been immediate. Six carriers have already submitted applications to operate jet services, signalling genuine commercial confidence in the destination.
Which Airlines Are Applying and Where They Want to Fly
Airport operator InJourney Airports confirmed the six applicants to ANTARA News, which first reported the details. The list covers a broad cross-section of Indonesian aviation alongside one regional international carrier.
Citilink has applied for routes to Kualanamu, Denpasar and Surabaya. Super Air Jet has put in the widest domestic network proposal, covering Kualanamu, Denpasar, Pekanbaru, Makassar, Batam, Padang, Balikpapan and Pontianak. Garuda Indonesia has applied for a Denpasar service, while Wings Air plans to connect Bandung with Lampung and Palembang. TransNusa has proposed both domestic flights to Lampung and regional international services to Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru in Malaysia. Singapore's Scoot has applied for a direct Singapore to Bandung route.
Flight slots will be allocated by InJourney Airports based on the airport's operational capacity once safety inspections and infrastructure checks are completed.
Government Support and Ground-Level Upgrades
The Transport Ministry has prepared permits covering up to 24 domestic routes, with regional international services also being facilitated. That regulatory groundwork removes a significant barrier for carriers that want to launch quickly once the airport reopens.
On the ground, the Bandung City Government is upgrading roads, public spaces and gateway infrastructure around the airport to improve the arrival experience for passengers. These parallel efforts, regulatory readiness at the national level and physical improvements at the city level, suggest the reopening is being treated as a coordinated economic priority rather than a routine operational restart.
