Bandung BRT, Monorail, and Toll Road: What's Coming and When

Bandung is in the middle of its most ambitious public transport overhaul in decades. Three projects designated under Indonesia's National Strategic Projects program are at different stages of development, and together they could significantly change how people arrive in, move through, and experience the city.

The BRT: Already Under Construction, Operational by Mid-2027

The most concrete change is the Bandung Rapid Transit bus network, which broke ground earlier this year. According to the Jakarta Globe, Mayor Muhammad Farhan confirmed at the Investor Daily Roundtable in Jakarta that the system is on schedule to become fully operational by mid-2027.

The network will span Greater Bandung, connecting the cities of Bandung and Cimahi with the regencies of Bandung, West Bandung, and Sumedang. It is designed to replace the fragmented minibus services that currently carry much of the city's passenger load. As part of the transition, the historic Cicaheum Terminal has already been closed and is being converted into the BRT's primary depot. The World Bank is supporting the project financially.

The Monorail: A North-South Corridor in the Planning Stage

A light elevated monorail running from Kopo in South Bandung to Simpang Dago in the north is further out but officially in motion. The route passes through some of the city's busiest commercial and residential corridors.

Farhan outlined a timeline of roughly 18 months for a feasibility study, followed by another 18 months for detailed engineering design, putting a groundbreaking approximately three years away. The project is already listed in the National Development Planning Agency's (Bappenas) project pipeline and its financing framework, known as the Blue Book. France and European investors have been named as potential funding partners.

The BIUTR Toll Road: $720 Million to Cut Inner-City Congestion

The 27-kilometer Bandung Intra Urban Toll Road (BIUTR) is an elevated expressway estimated to cost around Rp 12.6 trillion, or roughly $720 million. It is designed to link the Pasteur toll gate with the Cisumdawu Toll Road through eastern Bandung, separating through traffic from local vehicles. City officials project it could reduce inner-city congestion by as much as 50 percent once complete. Australia, Japan, and South Korea have all expressed interest in financing the project, according to Farhan.

Airport Access: A Piece Still Missing

Farhan also raised the prospect of Husein Sastranegara International Airport regaining international flight status. The airport lost most scheduled commercial services after the government shifted flights to the newer Kertajati International Airport. Restoring direct international connections would complement the city's existing transport improvements, including access via the Whoosh high-speed railway. Bandung's primary international visitor markets are currently Malaysia and Singapore.

Why It Matters for Hosts

Independent accommodation and experience operators in Bandung have a practical window right now. The BRT's mid-2027 launch is close enough to plan around: properties near future BRT corridors or stops should start communicating that access advantage in their listings and guest communications. The monorail corridor from Kopo to Simpang Dago runs through high-traffic commercial and residential zones, so operators in that belt may want to monitor pillar-placement announcements as planning advances. More immediately, the closure of Cicaheum Terminal changes arrival patterns for guests who rely on intercity bus connections, so updating directions and transfer guidance for incoming travelers is a practical step to take today.
