Indonesia's Inbound Travel Map Is Being Redrawn

Indonesia's appeal to international travelers is widening in 2026, and the countries driving that interest are shifting in ways that matter for anyone running accommodation or experiences in the archipelago. Accommodation search data covering January through June 2026, first reported by Agoda in a press release issued July 10, 2026, shows China recording the highest year-on-year growth in travel interest toward Indonesia at 44 percent, enough to push it into the top five source markets for the first time, overtaking Japan.

Malaysia and Singapore hold the top two positions, posting growth of 18 percent and 17 percent respectively compared to the same period in 2025. South Korea, previously ranked second, has slipped to third, while Australia sits fourth. The data suggests Southeast Asian travelers are leaning further into Indonesia even as enthusiasm from some North Asian markets cools.

Agoda also points to the weakening rupiah as a factor reinforcing Indonesia's value proposition for visitors prioritizing affordability, and notes that new flight routes between Indonesia and China announced recently are likely to sustain Chinese traveler momentum through the rest of the year.

Bali Leads, but Emerging Destinations Are Moving Fast

Bali remains the most searched destination in Indonesia among international travelers, followed by Jakarta, Batam Island, Lombok, and Bandung. Jakarta and Batam's presence in the top five signals growing interest in urban gateways and border-adjacent islands, not just established leisure spots.

The more striking story is in the growth rankings. Sukabumi, a highland destination in West Java known for its waterfalls, lush scenery, and geopark landscapes, recorded a 4.6-times increase in traveler interest compared to H1 2025, making it the fastest-growing destination in the country. In eastern Indonesia, Manado and Gorontalo ranked second and third among the fastest-growing destinations, each seeing searches roughly triple year-on-year. Both cities attract visitors with marine biodiversity, local culinary culture, and distinctive traditions.

Gede Gunawan, Senior Country Director for Indonesia at Agoda, was quoted in the release saying that the strong growth in interest toward Sukabumi, Manado, and Gorontalo shows travelers are eager to explore Indonesia beyond Bali, and that affordability, accessibility, and diverse experiences position the country well for continued growth.

Why It Matters for Hosts

Independent operators in Sukabumi, Manado, and Gorontalo are sitting on a rare window of early-mover advantage. When a destination's search interest triples or quadruples before accommodation supply catches up, properties that invest now in professional photography, multilingual listings, and clear communication of what makes their location distinctive stand to capture a disproportionate share of that incoming demand. Hosts in these areas should also consider whether their current distribution setup reaches travelers from China and Southeast Asia specifically, given that those are the fastest-growing source markets. Simple steps such as translating key property information into Mandarin and ensuring pricing is competitive in those travelers' home currencies can meaningfully improve conversion.

For operators already established in Bali or Bandung, the data reinforces that Malaysian and Singaporean guests remain a core and growing audience worth cultivating through targeted communication and repeat-guest programs.
