Greater Bandung BRT: 18 New Routes Planned for 2027 Launch
West Java's provincial government has confirmed 18 bus rapid transit routes for the Greater Bandung metropolitan area, with full operations targeted for 2027. The project carries a price tag of approximately Rp 1.3 trillion (around US$72.10 million) and will extend public transit coverage well beyond Bandung city's current boundaries.
What the Network Will Cover
The Greater Bandung BRT is designed as an integrated system serving four administrative areas: Bandung city, Cimahi city, Bandung regency, West Bandung regency, and portions of Sumedang regency to the east. That last inclusion is notable because Sumedang borders Bandung regency and sits close to the city itself, meaning the university town of Jatinangor will be drawn into the network.
The project falls under the national Indonesian Mass Transit Project, known as MASTRAN, which is overseen by the Transportation Ministry's Land Transportation Directorate General. West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi joined Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Leuwipanjang bus terminal on July 22, alongside mayors and regents from across the Bandung Metropolitan Area.
Building on an Existing Foundation
Bandung is not starting from zero. Six BRT corridors and two feeder routes already operate under the Metro Jabar Trans brand. Current services run from Leuwipanjang terminal to Dago, and separately to Soreang and Majalaya in Bandung regency. Other corridors link Alun-alun Bandung to Kota Baru Parahyangan in West Bandung regency, connect Bandung Electronic City to Baleendah, and run from Dipatukur in Bandung city all the way to Jatinangor in Sumedang regency.
The 2027 expansion builds directly on this skeleton, adding routes that will connect population centers in neighboring regions rather than simply circulating within the city core.
What Changes for Travelers
For independent travelers, the practical shift is significant. Destinations that currently require a private car or informal transport, such as hill towns in West Bandung regency or areas around Jatinangor, will become reachable by a formal, scheduled network. Visitors staying in central Bandung will have more options for day trips without relying on ride-hailing apps or negotiated fares.
The integration across five administrative zones also means a single system rather than a patchwork of local services, which typically makes navigation easier for first-time visitors.
Why It Matters for Hosts
Independent guesthouses, homestays, and boutique properties located outside Bandung city proper stand to benefit most. Properties in West Bandung regency or along the Soreang corridor, which may have struggled to attract guests without private transport, will become meaningfully more accessible once the expanded network is running. Hosts in those areas should begin updating their arrival instructions now to include BRT stop information, and consider how proximity to a planned corridor could become a genuine selling point in listings and direct booking communications.
