Jakarta's LRT Network Gets a Critical Final Piece
Jakarta is moving to close one of the most obvious gaps in its public transport map. Governor Pramono Anung has announced plans to extend the Jakarta Light Rail Transit line from Manggarai Station to Dukuh Atas, with a target completion date of 2028. The announcement came as the governor inspected progress on the current Phase 1B extension, which runs 6.4 kilometres from Velodrome Station in East Jakarta to Manggarai in South Jakarta and is already around 95 percent complete, with operations scheduled to begin in August.
What the Extension Involves
The Manggarai-to-Dukuh Atas leg is roughly two kilometres long and is estimated to cost around Rp 2 trillion, equivalent to approximately US$110 million. According to the governor, the route will largely follow existing railway corridors, which removes the need for land acquisition and makes the 2028 timeline realistic. Pramono framed the decision in direct terms: once the line reaches Manggarai, it will continue immediately to Dukuh Atas.
Why Dukuh Atas Changes the Equation
Dukuh Atas is already a transit-oriented development node where several major transport modes converge. Once the LRT arrives, commuters at that single location will be able to transfer between the city-owned LRT, the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), the KRL Commuter Line, the Airport Rail Link, the Greater Jakarta LRT, and the Transjakarta bus network. That level of intermodal connectivity is rare in any city, and Jakarta's governor has explicitly cited it as the mechanism for shifting residents away from private vehicles.
For travelers arriving from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport or coming in from Greater Jakarta's suburban rail network, Dukuh Atas will become a natural gateway into the city's central districts, without the need to hail a ride or navigate traffic.
Timeline at a Glance
- August 2026: Phase 1B (Velodrome to Manggarai, 6.4 km) scheduled to open
- 2028 target: Manggarai to Dukuh Atas extension (~2 km) to be completed
- Cost: Approximately Rp 2 trillion (US$110 million)
- Key advantage: Route follows existing rail corridors, avoiding land acquisition delays
Why It Matters for Hosts
Independent accommodation operators in central Jakarta, particularly those near Sudirman, Menteng, or the Kuningan corridor, are about to become significantly easier to reach by public transport. When the Dukuh Atas hub reaches full connectivity, guests arriving by airport rail, suburban commuter train, or intercity rail at Manggarai will be able to reach the LRT network without a taxi or ride-hailing app. Hosts who update their arrival instructions now to include public transport routes via Dukuh Atas will stand out to the growing segment of independent travelers who prefer not to rely on private vehicles. It is also worth monitoring whether the Phase 1B opening in August generates a noticeable uptick in transit-oriented bookings, as that data could inform pricing and availability decisions ahead of the 2028 full extension.
