A Globally Recognized Design Brand Arrives in Ubud
Ubud is about to welcome a significant new hospitality name. IHG Hotels & Resorts is bringing its Kimpton brand to Indonesia for the first time, with Kimpton Bali Ubud set to open later in 2026. The property sits along the Wos River in the heart of Ubud, placing guests within walking distance of the Ubud Palace and a short trip from the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary and the Tegallalang Rice Terraces. For travelers arriving by air, the hotel is roughly a 90-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport near Denpasar.
What the Property Offers
The hotel will operate 101 keys across a mix of rooms, suites, and villas, and the entire property is pet-friendly. Five food and beverage venues will serve a range of cuisines, from local Indonesian cooking to international options. One standout is Imamura, a refined Japanese restaurant led by a Michelin-lauded chef of the same name, which signals that the property is positioning itself toward discerning travelers who expect serious dining alongside their cultural immersion.
Wellness is anchored by the Sakshi Spa, which focuses on traditional Balinese treatments. A two-storey fitness studio and a pool round out the active amenities. The brand also brings its signature "Forgot It? We've Got It!" service, which supplies guests with travel essentials they may have left behind, a small but frequently appreciated touch that independent properties often struggle to replicate at scale.
General Manager Austin Jones, who has spent a decade with the Kimpton brand, will lead the opening. As first reported by Connecting Travel, Jones described Ubud as "culturally rich and creatively alive," framing the debut as a deliberate choice of location rather than a generic market entry.
IHG's Growing Footprint in Indonesia
This opening is not IHG's first move in Indonesia. The group already operates more than 30 hotels across the country under various brands, from Six Senses Uluwatu Bali at the luxury end to Holiday Inn Bali Sanur in the midscale segment. Adding Kimpton fills a design-forward, lifestyle-oriented gap in that portfolio, particularly in Ubud, where the traveler profile skews toward culturally curious, experience-driven visitors rather than pure beach-resort guests.
The Kimpton brand is also expanding in other international markets. A 280-key Kimpton property in Dubai's Business Bay district is scheduled to debut in 2026, suggesting the brand is in an active global growth phase.
Why It Matters for Hosts
For independent guesthouses, boutique villas, and small hotels operating in and around Ubud, the arrival of a well-resourced international lifestyle brand is both a competitive signal and a market validation. When a major group invests in a destination, it typically drives increased awareness and inbound interest, which can lift occupancy across the local accommodation sector. The practical takeaway: now is a good time to audit what genuinely differentiates your property from a polished international hotel. Hyper-local knowledge, personalized service, authentic community connections, and flexibility on things like meal timing or custom itineraries are areas where independent operators can hold a real advantage. Leaning into those strengths in your guest communications and listing descriptions will matter more once a high-profile competitor opens nearby.
