Kimpton Arrives in Ubud: What the Brand's Indonesia Debut Means

Ubud is about to welcome a significant new name in luxury hospitality. IHG Hotels and Resorts has announced that Kimpton Suntaya Bali Ubud will open later in 2026, making it the first Kimpton property in Indonesia. The hotel sits alongside the Wos River, within walking distance of the Ubud Art Market and the historic Ubud Palace and Water Palace, a complex associated with the Balinese master artist I Gusti Nyoman Lempad.

A Property Built Around Ubud's Creative Identity

The name Suntaya draws on Sanskrit roots: Suniya, meaning stillness, and Taya, meaning vitality. That pairing is deliberate. The hotel's concept frames Ubud as a place where retreat and social energy coexist, and the architecture reinforces this idea. Designed by Denton Corker Marshall, the building follows the natural contours of the hillside and riverside terrain, referencing the movement and rhythm of Balinese ceremonial processions.

The 101 accommodations range from standard rooms to pool suites and private pool villas. Five dining venues are planned, with the most distinctive being Imamura Ubud, an omakase restaurant led by Michelin-starred Chef Hirofumi Imamura. A second concept from the same chef, Shaku by Imamura, takes a more relaxed approach to Japanese izakaya dining.

Wellness programming includes a two-story fitness studio, contrast-therapy recovery facilities, and Sakshi Spa, which draws on Balinese healing traditions.

Kimpton's Signature Guest Programs

The brand brings several guest-facing programs that have become part of its identity across Asia. The "Forgot It, We've Got It!" amenity service supplies travel essentials guests may have left behind. Kimpton Kickstart offers complimentary coffee, tea, and pastries each morning. Kimpton Social is an evening gathering concept designed to encourage informal connection among guests. General Manager Austin Jones, who has worked across nearly a dozen Kimpton properties, will lead the property.

Kimpton's Asia expansion has moved quickly since its regional debut at Kimpton Da'An in Taipei. Properties in Bangkok, Samui, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur have followed. The Ubud opening joins a broader 2026 pipeline that also includes hotels in Adelaide, Midtown New York, Rotterdam, and Shanghai.

Why It Matters for Hosts

The arrival of an internationally recognized lifestyle brand in Ubud raises the benchmark for what independent travelers expect from the destination. Boutique guesthouses, villas, and small hotels in the area will increasingly be compared against a property offering curated wellness programming, a Michelin-starred dining concept, and consistent brand-level service. Independent operators can respond by leaning into what a large brand cannot easily replicate: genuine local knowledge, flexible personalization, and direct relationships with guests. Highlighting proximity to the same landmarks Kimpton is marketing, such as the Ubud Art Market and the Water Palace, while offering a more intimate and locally rooted experience, is a credible point of differentiation. This is also a useful moment to review how properties present themselves to travelers researching Ubud, since increased brand-level marketing for the destination will likely lift overall search interest in the area.
