Bali's Northwest Coast Is Having a Culinary Moment

For travelers who last visited Bali a decade ago, the traffic and the tattoo parlors will look familiar. What may genuinely surprise them is the depth of the restaurant scene that has taken root in Canggu and the neighboring village of Pererenan. These two areas now host a cluster of serious, chef-led dining rooms that sit comfortably alongside anything you might find in Sydney or Copenhagen. Below are six venues worth planning a meal around, as first reported by Genevieve Quigley in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Six Restaurants

Masonry, Canggu has been operating since 2018, long enough to qualify as an anchor of the local scene. Chef Benjamin Cross built the concept around what he calls "elevated simplicity," with a Mediterranean-inspired menu that includes house-made charcuterie and fattoush. The brand has since expanded to Uluwatu and, as of December 2025, to Niseko in Japan.

Shelter, Pererenan is led by British chef and co-owner Stephen Moore, whose background spans Sydney's Rockpool and Icebergs as well as El Racó de Can Fabes in Spain, a three-Michelin-starred kitchen. The menu draws on Middle Eastern and Mediterranean traditions; lamb kofta, barbecued octopus, and roasted bone marrow are among the dishes that have drawn attention.

Hippie Fish, Pererenan occupies a beachfront position that makes it a natural choice for sunset dining. The kitchen focuses on locally sourced seafood prepared with European technique, including spaghetti vongole and grilled tuna steak. A rooftop cocktail lounge handles the after-dinner crowd.

Muda By/Suka, Canggu pitches itself toward diners who want sophistication without a steep bill. The dimly lit space sets the tone for a menu that combines traditional Indonesian flavors with contemporary East Asian technique. Sushi nori tacos and dumplings are among the signature items.

Bar Vera, Pererenan is the second Canggu-area project from chef Benjamin Cross. Here the format is a wine bar built around local seasonal produce. Weekly fixtures including Steak Frites Night and "Le Brunch Sundays" have developed a regular following.

Artisan, Pererenan is the most decorated kitchen on this list in terms of chef pedigree. Executive chef Paolo Tancredi Arlotta has cooked at Noma in Copenhagen, Quay in Sydney, and Vue de Monde in Melbourne. The menu reflects that background: seafood risotto, gnocchi with beef cheek, and a Basque cheesecake that the original report singles out as a highlight.

A Scene Built on Talent, Not Just Tourism

What connects these six venues is that each is led by a chef with a verifiable international track record. This is not a collection of beach bars trading on atmosphere alone. The concentration of this talent in Pererenan and Canggu specifically suggests that the area has become a genuine destination for hospitality professionals looking to build something outside their home markets.

For travelers, that means the gap between a casual warung nasi goreng and a full chef-driven dinner has never been wider or more interesting to explore in a single trip.

Why It Matters for Hosts

Independent villa and guesthouse operators in the Canggu-Pererenan corridor now have a compelling, concrete answer to the question guests ask most often: "Where should we eat?" Curating a short, reliable restaurant list that includes venues at different price points and formats, from Bar Vera's relaxed wine-bar format to Artisan's fine-dining register, adds tangible value to the guest experience without any additional overhead. Hosts who build relationships with these restaurants may also find opportunities for reciprocal referrals, since kitchen teams frequently field accommodation questions from their own regulars.
