Foreign Ridership on Whoosh Hits a New Milestone

Indonesia's Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway, Whoosh, recorded 184,740 foreign passengers in the first six months of 2026, according to figures released by operator PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC) on 3 July. The number brings the cumulative foreign ridership since the line opened in October 2023 to 866,458 travelers, a figure that underscores how quickly the route has embedded itself in regional travel patterns.

Malaysians Are the Dominant Visitor Group

Of the 184,740 foreign passengers counted between January and June 2026, 74,902 came from Malaysia, making it the single largest source market by a significant margin. KCIC general manager for corporate secretary Eva Chairunisa attributed this to a steady rise in Malaysian tourists travelling to Bandung specifically for leisure, shopping, and culinary experiences. The pattern suggests that Bandung, rather than Jakarta, is often the primary draw, with the capital serving as the gateway.

This is a meaningful distinction for anyone operating accommodation or experiences in either city. Visitors arriving at Jakarta's Halim station and continuing to Bandung are not necessarily Jakarta overnighters; they may be passing through. Conversely, Bandung properties are receiving guests who have already made a relatively easy international journey and are primed for the kind of relaxed, experience-led travel the city is known for.

What the Numbers Say About the Route's Reach

Whoosh covers the roughly 140-kilometre distance between Jakarta and Bandung in approximately 45 minutes, compared with around four hours by road or conventional rail. Operating at speeds of up to 350 kilometres per hour, it is the first high-speed railway in Southeast Asia. That combination of speed and novelty has clearly resonated with international visitors, who now represent a meaningful share of total ridership less than three years into operations.

The cumulative figure of 866,458 foreign passengers since October 2023 averages out to a sustained and growing international audience, not a one-time curiosity spike. The H1 2026 result alone accounts for more than a fifth of all foreign journeys ever made on the line, pointing to accelerating rather than plateauing demand.

Why It Matters for Hosts

Independent operators in both Jakarta and Bandung should treat the Whoosh corridor as a single hospitality zone rather than two separate markets. A guest staying in Jakarta can realistically make a same-day excursion to Bandung, and a guest based in Bandung may have flown into Jakarta and connected by rail. Hosts who communicate clearly about the rail link in their listings and pre-arrival messaging, including journey time, station locations, and ticketing, remove a common friction point for first-time visitors. Given that Malaysian travellers currently make up the largest foreign segment, content or communications in Bahasa Malaysia or that reference cross-border ease could also improve conversion for properties targeting that market.
