Key takeaways
  • Wrocław is the most affordable major weekend destination in Europe according to the Getsby analysis, at €163 for two people excluding flights.
  • Polish cities occupied all five top spots in the 100-destination ranking, with Poznań, Katowice, Gdańsk, and Kraków following Wrocław.
  • Daily food costs in Wrocław were estimated at €18.75 per person and local transport at €5.85, giving travelers a practical budgeting baseline.
  • Warsaw placed tenth overall at around €112 per person per day, while Zurich was the most expensive city surveyed at €1,325 for two.
  • Flights were excluded from all calculations because price variation makes fair cross-city comparison impractical.

Wrocław Leads a Polish Sweep of Europe's Best-Value Weekend Destinations

If you are planning a short city break in Europe and budget is a priority, the data points firmly toward Poland. A new analysis has placed five Polish cities in the top five positions for value-for-money weekend travel, with Wrocław claiming the number-one spot across 100 European destinations surveyed.

What the Numbers Actually Show

Payments company Getsby, drawing on travel-cost data from Budget Your Trip, calculated the estimated cost of a two-person, mid-range weekend in each city. Flights were deliberately excluded because airfare varies too widely to allow fair comparison. The focus was on accommodation, food, and local transport.

For Wrocław, that total came to €163 for two people over a weekend, which works out to roughly €41 per person per day. Within that figure, food was estimated at €18.75 per person per day and local transport at €5.85. Those are concrete, usable numbers for anyone building a trip budget.

Poznań followed in second place at €168.50 for two, keeping the gap with Wrocław narrow. Katowice ranked third at €239, Gdańsk fourth at €275.25, and Kraków rounded out the top five at €295. Warsaw, while not in the top five, still placed tenth overall, at around €112 per person per day.

The only non-Polish cities to break into the top ten were Sofia, Zagreb, Malmö, and Budapest. At the far end of the scale, Zurich was the most expensive destination in the survey, with the equivalent two-person weekend estimated at €1,325.

What This Means for Travelers Choosing Between Polish Cities

The spread across Poland's major cities is worth noting. Wrocław and Poznań sit in a clearly distinct tier, costing roughly half what a Kraków weekend would run. Travelers who are flexible about destination have a genuine financial incentive to look west. That said, Kraków's higher cost still places it well below most Western European capitals, so it remains competitive in a broader European context.

For travelers already committed to a specific city, the food and transport breakdowns are the more actionable figures. Knowing that daily food costs in Wrocław average under €19 per person helps set realistic expectations for dining out versus self-catering.

Why It Matters for Hosts

Independent accommodation operators in Wrocław and Poznań are sitting on a marketing asset that many have not fully activated. When a credible, data-driven ranking places your city at the top of a Europe-wide affordability study, that is a concrete, shareable proof point for international travelers who are weighing destinations. Hosts can reference this ranking in their listings, welcome materials, and direct communications to reassure guests that their overall trip costs will stay manageable, which often reduces booking hesitation. It is also a useful prompt to review local partnership opportunities: recommending affordable local restaurants, tram passes, or walking itineraries reinforces the value proposition the city already holds and builds the kind of guest experience that generates repeat visits and referrals.
