Key takeaways
  • PT MRT Jakarta is expanding Bundaran HI station with a new 4,400-square-metre underground concourse targeted for completion by mid-2027.
  • Three new entrances, including an elevator exit to Jalan M.H. Thamrin, will improve pedestrian access and reduce crowding.
  • The station already serves 450,000 to 500,000 passengers per month and expects higher volumes when Phase 2A launches at end-2027.
  • The expanded space will include retail, food and beverage, and commercial partnership areas under a transit-oriented development model.
  • A new interchange connection to the Transjakarta bus network at the HI Astra Roundabout stop is part of the same project.

Jakarta MRT Bundaran HI Station Gets Bigger Ahead of Phase 2A Opening

One of Jakarta's busiest transit hubs is getting a significant upgrade. PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) has begun expanding the Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta Station to prepare for the additional passenger load that will arrive when the north-south MRT line extends northward under Phase 2A. The work is scheduled for completion by mid-2027, ahead of the segment's projected end-of-2027 launch.

What Is Being Built

The expansion centers on a new multifunctional concourse that will add roughly 4,400 square metres of underground floor space to the station. Three new entrances are part of the same project: two on the western side of the station and one on the eastern side. Two of those entrances will include both stairs and escalators, while the third will be an elevator-only access point connecting directly to the pedestrian zone along Jalan M.H. Thamrin.

The new underground level will also link to the lift serving the Transjakarta HI Astra Roundabout bus stop, creating a more seamless interchange between the two transit networks. A dedicated cooling and ventilation tower is planned to keep the deeper basement comfortable for passengers.

As of August 2026, construction had reached 23.52 percent completion since breaking ground in February 2026. Active work at that point included preboring at two estuaries and preparation for open-cut construction phases, according to details first reported by VOI.

Why the Station Needs More Room

Bundaran HI already sits about 18 metres below street level and handles between 450,000 and 500,000 passengers per month, making it one of the most heavily used stops on the existing Phase 1 corridor. That figure is expected to climb once Phase 2A's first segment, running from Bundaran HI toward Monas, begins service at the end of 2027. The broader network extension reaching into the older city district is targeted for completion by the end of 2029.

Beyond circulation, PT MRT Jakarta is using the expansion to introduce a transit-oriented development layer to the station. The new concourse space is designed to accommodate retail outlets, food and beverage vendors, service businesses, and partnership areas, turning the station into a commercial node as well as a transport interchange.

"The Bundaran HI Bank Jakarta station, which reaches a depth of about 18 meters below ground level, is one of the busiest stations in phase 1 of the north-south line with an average of 450-500 thousand customers each month," said Rendy Primartantyo, Corporate Secretary Division Head of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda), in a statement issued on 14 September 2026.

Why It Matters for Hosts

Independent accommodation operators in the Sudirman-Thamrin corridor and the Kota area should watch this project closely. When Phase 2A opens, Bundaran HI will become an even more central interchange, making properties within walking distance of MRT stations along the north-south spine more attractive to transit-oriented travelers. Hosts can start positioning their listings around improved connectivity now, emphasizing proximity to the MRT network and the forthcoming direct link toward Monas and the historic city center. It is also worth monitoring the new commercial concourse: the 4,400-square-metre retail and partnership space could create partnership or pop-up opportunities for local operators once the expansion opens.
